Prelude – “The Holy Light” – By George Blake

Call to Worship

  • L: The mountain top…the shining face…the glowing clothes…the voice of God speaking from the cloud…the commandments etched in stone.
  • P: Sometimes God shows up in ways we cannot deny: in a place we can go, as a light we can see, with a voice we can hear, on a stone we can touch.
  • L: Sometimes there is the veil, or the overshadowing, terrifying cloud, or the questions, or the appearing and disappearing, or the excitement and wondering, or the silence.
  • P: Sometimes God shows up in ways we cannot deny. But always God shows up, somehow. So we have shown up here, now. May God give us eyes to see.

*Hymn – “From the Rising of the Sun” – FWS#2024

From the rising of the sun
to the going down of the same,
the name of the Lord shall be praised.

From the rising of the sun
to the going down of the same,
the name of the Lord shall be praised.

So praise ye the Lord.
Praise ye the Lord.

From the rising of the sun
to the going down of the same,
the name of the Lord shall be praised.

*Congregational Prayer

God of light, love, and glory, reveal your presence to us today. As you did to your friends on the mountain, send your Spirit to show us who you truly are. May the brilliance of your face illuminate our worship gathering places as we dare to proclaim your Word. And may we, your people, be never unable to tell all of that we have seen and heard. Through Jesus Christ, now glorified and forever alive. Amen.

Scripture Reading – 2 Corinthians 4:3-6

3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are on the road to destruction. 4The god of this age has blinded the minds of those who don’t have faith so they couldn’t see the light of the gospel that reveals Christ’s glory. Christ is the image of God.

5We don’t preach about ourselves. Instead, we preach about Jesus Christ as Lord, and we describe ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6God said that light should shine out of the darkness. He is the same one who shone in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

Anthem – “Cornerstone” – Arr. by Peggy Bettscher

Scripture Reading – Mark 9:2-9

2Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and brought them to the top of a very high mountain where they were alone. He was transformed in front of them, 3and his clothes were amazingly bright, brighter than if they had been bleached white. 4Elijah and Moses appeared and were talking with Jesus. 5Peter reacted to all of this by saying to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s make three shrines— one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6He said this because he didn’t know how to respond, for the three of them were terrified.

7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice spoke from the cloud, “This is my Son, whom I dearly love. Listen to him!” 8Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Human One had risen from the dead.

  • L: The Word of God, the Word of Life.
  • P: Thanks be to God!

Sermon – “The Light is Still Breaking Through”

Pastoral Prayer & Lord’s Prayer

*Hymn – “Open Our Eyes” – FWS #2086

Open our eyes, Lord,
we want to see Jesus,
to reach out and touch him,
and say that we love him.
Open our ears, Lord,
and help us to listen.
Open our eyes, Lord,
we want to see Jesus.

Doxology
*Prayer of Dedication

*Closing Hymn – “Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Sky” – UMH #173

  1. Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
    Christ, the true, the only light,
    Sun of Righteousness, arise,
    triumph o’er the shades of night;
    Dayspring from on high, be near;
    Daystar, in my heart appear.
  2. Dark and cheerless is the morn
    unaccompanied by thee;
    joyless is the day’s return,
    till thy mercy’s beams I see;
    till they inward light impart,
    cheer my eyes and warm my heart.
  3. Visit then this soul of mine;
    pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
    fill me, Radiancy divine,
    scatter all my unbelief;
    more and more thyself display,
    shining to the perfect day.

*Benediction

*Postlude – “Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Sky”

Lyrics to Special Music

Shine, Jesus, Shine
Lord, the light of your love is shining in the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us: shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory. Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy. Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light! Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness, set us free by the truth you now bring us, Shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory. Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy. Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light! As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here may our lives tell your story: Shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory. Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy. Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light! Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory. Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire, on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy. Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light. Shine! Shine, shine! Shine! Shine!
