Prelude – “Lord I Want to be a Christian” – Brian Glyncannon

*Call to Worship

*Song – “Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine” – UMH #606

  1. Come, let us use the grace divine, and all with one accord,
    in a perpetual covenant join ourselves to Christ the Lord;
    Give up ourselves, thru Jesus’ power, his name to glorify;
    and promise, in this sacred hour, for God to live and die.
  2. The covenant we this moment make be ever kept in mind;
    we will no more our God forsake, or cast these words behind.
    We never will throw off the fear of God who hears our vow.
    and if thou art well pleased to hear, come down and meet us now.
  3. Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, let all our hearts receive,
    present with thy celestial host the peaceful answer give;
    to each covenant the blood apply which takes our sins away,
    and register our names on high and keep us to that day!

Time with the Children

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Scripture Reading – Psalm 50

1From the rising of the sun to where it sets, God, the Lord God, speaks, calling out to the earth. 2From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines brightly. 3Our God is coming; he won’t keep quiet. A devouring fire is before him; a storm rages all around him. 4God calls out to the skies above and to the earth in order to judge his people: 5“Bring my faithful to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6The skies proclaim his righteousness because God himself is the judge. 7“Listen, my people, I will now speak; Israel, I will now testify against you. I am God-your God! 8I’m not punishing you for your for your sacrifices or for your entirely burned offerings, which are always before me. 9I won’t accept bulls from your house or goats from your corrals 10because every forest animal already belongs to me, as do the cattle on a thousand hills. 11I know every mountain bird; even the insects in the fields are mine. 12Even if I were hungry, I wouldn’t tell you because the whole world and everything in it already belong to me. 13Do I eat bulls’ meat? Do I drink goats’ blood? 14Offer God a sacrifice of thanksgiving! Fulfill the promises you made to the Most High! 15Cry out to me whenever you are in trouble; I will deliver you, then you will honor me.” 16But to the wicked God says, “Why do you talk about my laws? Why do you even mention my covenant? 17You hate discipline, and you toss my words behind your back. 18You make friends with thieves whenever you see one; you spend your time with adulterers. 19You set your mouth free to do evil, then harness your tongue to tell lies. 20You sit around, talking about your own siblings; you find fault with the children of your very own mother. 21You’ve done these things and I’ve kept quiet. You thought I was just like you! But now I’m punishing you; I’m laying it all out, right in front of your face. 22So consider this carefully, all you who forget God, or I’ll rip you to pieces with no one to deliver you: 23The one who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving is the one who honors me. And it is to the one who charts the correct path that I will show divine salvation.”

Doxology and Prayer of Dedication

*Hymn – “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” – UMH #117

  1. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,
    our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!
  2. Under the shadow of thy throne, still may we dwell secure;
    sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.
  3. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,
    from everlasting, thou art God, to endless years the same.
  4. A thousand ages, in thy sight, are like an evening gone;
    short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun.
  5. Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all who breathe away;
    they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.
  6. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come;
    be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home.

Scripture Reading – John 15:1-8

1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vineyard keeper. 2He removes any of my branches that don’t produce fruit, and he trims any branch that produces fruit so that it will produce even more fruit. 3You are already trimmed because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. A branch that can’t produce fruit by itself, but must remain in the vine. Likewise, you can’t produce fruit unless you remain in me. 5I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything. 6If you don’t remain in me, you will be like a branch that is thrown out and dries up. Those branches are gathered up, thrown into a fire, and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8My Father is glorified when you produce much fruit and in this way prove that you are my disciples.

*Closing Song – “Covenant Prayer” – W&S #3115

This is my prayer, Lord, to you.
My promise and my vow, string and true.
And the covenant I make on earth,
let it be fulfilled in heaven. Amen.

  1. Lord, I am not mine, but yours alone.
    Let your will be done and not my own.
    Put me where you will, and let me serve;
    in everything I do, let me endure. [Refrain]
  2. Father, Son, and Spirit hear my cry,
    forever I am yours and you are mine.
    Father, Son and Spirit hear my cry,
    forever I am yours and you are mine. [Refrain]

Let me be employed for you,
laid aside for you,
lifted high for you or brought low.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things or nothing.

  1. Lord, I am not mine, but yours alone.
    Let your will be done and not my own.
    Put me where you will, and let me serve;
    in everything I do, let me endure. [Refrain]

*Postlude – “Covenant Prayer”

Lyrics to Special Music

I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light
Refrain: In him there is no darkness at all; The star of my life is Jesus.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God; Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus

I want to walk as a child of the light; I want to follow Jesus.
God set the stars to give light to the world; The star of my life is Jesus
I want to see the brightness of God; I want to look at Jesus.
Clear Sun of righteousness, shine on my path, And show me the way to the Father
I’m looking for the coming of Christ; I want to be with Jesus.
When we have run with patience the race, We shall know the joy of Jesus.
