*Call to Worship

*Song – “We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding” – FWS #2103

  1. We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place,
    where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace.
    Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain,
    searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain.
  2. Light breaks through our clouds and shadows, splendor bathes the flesh-joined Word,
    Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard.
    Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the Law and Prophets meet:
    Christ, with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete.
  3. Strengthened by this glimpse of glory, fearful lest our faith decline,
    We, like Peter, find it tempting to remain and build a shrine.
    But true worship gives us courage to proclaim what we profess,
    that our daily lives may prove us people of the God we bless.

Special Music – “All Who Believe” – Arr. by Lloyd Larson

Scripture Reading – Matthew 2:1-12

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the territory of Judea during the rule of King Herod, magi came from the east to Jerusalem. 2They asked, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We’ve seen his star in the east, and we’ve come to honor him.”
3When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and everyone in Jerusalem was troubled with him. 4He gathered all the chief priests and the legal experts and asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5They said, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what the prophet wrote:
6You, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
        by no means are you least among the rulers of Judah,
            because from you will come one who governs,
            who will shepherd my people Israel.”
7Then Herod secretly called for the magi and found out from them the time when the star had first appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you’ve found him, report to me so that I too may go and honor him.” 9When they heard the king, they went; and look, the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. 11They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. Falling to their knees, they honored him. Then they opened their treasure chests and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12Because they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route.

*Closing Carol – “O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright” – UMH #247

  1. O Morning Star, how fair and bright thou beamest forth in truth and light,
    O Sovereign meek and lowly! Thou Root of Jesse, David’s Son,
    my Lord and Master, thou hast won my heart to serve thee solely!
    Thou art holy, fair and glorious, all-victorious,
    rich in blessing, rule and might o’er all possessing.
  2. Thou heavenly Brightness! Light divine! O deep within my heart now shine,
    and make thee there an altar! Fill me with joy and strength to be
    thy member, ever joined to thee in love that cannot falter;
    toward thee longing doth possess me; turn and bless me;
    here in sadness eye and heart long for thy gladness!
  3. What joy to know, when life is past, the Lord we love is first and last,
    the end and the beginning! He will one day, O glorious grace,
    transport us to that happy place beyond all tears and sinning!
    Amen! Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! Crown of gladness,
    we are yearning for the day of your returning.

*Benediction

Lyrics to Special Music

All Who Believe
We are called by our faith to be servants of God, humbly thankful for all we receive;
and with joy we embrace treasured blessings of grace freely falling on all who believe. All who believe, all who believe, sing of God’s marvelous ways! All who believe, believe, go forth in service and praise. “Feed by lambs, tend my sheep,” Jesus said, so we’ll keep off’ring comfort to all those who grieve. Deeds our Shepherd would do, these are deeds we’ll pursue. ‘Tis a privilege of all who believe. We would echo the cry,” Send me, Lord, here am I!” though our voice may not always be strong. Over rugged terrain, through the desert and plain, may we travel with Love as our song. All who believe, all who believe, sing of God’s marvelous ways! All who believe, believe, go forth in service and praise. All who believe, believe, go forth in service and praise!

Grace Alone
Every promise we can make, every prayer and step of faith; every difference we will
make is only by His grace. Every mountain we will climb, every ray of hope we shine; every blessing left behind is only by His grace. Grace alone which God supplies; strength unknown He will provide. Christ in us, our cornerstone, we will go forth in grace alone. Every soul we long to reach, every heart we hope to teach; everywhere we share His peace is only by His grace. Every loving word we say, every tear we wipe away; every sorrow turned to praise is only by His grace. Grace alone which God supplies; strength unknown He will provide. Christ in us, our cornerstone, we will go forth in grace alone.
