*Hymn – “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” – UMH #302 (vv. 1-4)

  1. Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!
Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!
  2. Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids him rise, Alleluia!
    Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!
  3. Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where’s thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia!
  4. Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!
    Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like him, like him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

*Congregational Prayer

Lord of Life and Power, through the mighty resurrection of your Son, you have overcome death and opened the gate of everlasting life. Grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory, who with you and the Holy Spirit is alive, one God, now and forever. Amen.

*Hymn – “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” – UMH #302 (v. 5)

*Hymn – “Christ Has Risen” – words: FWS #2115, tune: UMH #384

  1. Christ has risen while earth slumbers, Christ has risen where hope died,
as he said and as he promised, as we doubted and denied.
    Let the moon embrace the blessing; let the sun sustain the cheer;
let the world confirm the rumor: Christ is risen, God is here!
  2. Christ has risen for the people whom he died to love and save;
Christ has risen for the women bringing flowers to grace his grave.
Christ has risen for disciples huddled in an upstairs room.
He whose word inspired creation can’t be silenced by the tomb.
  3. Christ has risen to companion former friends who fear the night,
sensing loss and limitation where their faith had once burned bright.
They bemoan what is no longer, they expect no hopeful sign
till Christ ends their conversation, breaking bread and sharing wine.
  4. Christ has risen and forever lives to challenge and to change
all whose lives are messed or mangled, all who find religion strange.
Christ is risen, Christ is present making us what he has been
evidence of transformation in which God is known and seen.

Anthem – “Glorious Risen Christ” – By Lloyd Larson

Scripture Reading – Mark 16:1-8

1When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they could go and anoint Jesus’ dead body. 2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they came to the tomb. 3They were saying to each other, “Who’s going to roll the stone away from the entrance for us?”

4When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away. (And it was a very large stone!) 5Going into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right side; and they were startled.

6But he said to them, “Don’t be alarmed! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised. He isn’t here. Look, here’s the place where they laid him. 7Go, tell his disciples, especially Peter, that he is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.”

8Overcome with terror and dread, they fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

  • L: The Word of God, the Word of Life.
  • P: Thanks be to God!

*Closing Hymn “Easter People, Raise Your Voices” UMH #304

  1. Easter people, raise your voices,
Sounds of heaven in earth should ring.
    Christ has brought us Heaven’s choices;
    Heavenly music, let it ring.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Easter people, let us sing.
  2. Fear of death can no more stop us
    From our pressing here below.
    For our Lord empowered us
    To triumph over every foe.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
On to victory now we go.
  3. Every day to us is Easter,
    With its resurrection song.
When in trouble move the faster
To our God who rights the wrong.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
See the power of heavenly throngs.

*Benediction

  • L: As Christ burst forth from the tomb, may new life burst forth from us and show itself in acts of love and healing to a hurting world.
  • P: And may the same Christ, who lives forever and is the source of our new life, keep our hearts rejoicing and grant us peace this day and always. Amen.

*Postlude

Lyrics to Special Music

Introit for Easter
This is the day of celebration, this is the day of goodness and light. Earth and sky and all creation celebrate the wonder of life! This is the day of celebration, this is the day of goodness and light. Earth and sky and all creation celebrate the wonder of life! Christ is risen, sing hosanna, lift your voices to the sky. Christ is risen, alleluia! He is alive, he lives on high! This is the day of celebration, this is the day of goodness and light. Earth and sky and all creation celebrate the wonder of life! He is alive! He is alive! He is alive!

Glorious, Risen Christ
Before the sun had arisen Mary mourned for the Lord alone, But the darkened tomb was an empty room; the Son of God was gone! Glorious, risen Christ! Alive and robed in majesty! Yet the scars of the cross show the infinite cost, the miraculous gift of Christ’s love for us.Mary heard His voice in the garden quietly calling her name. She could not believe, nor her mind conceive that Jesus was alive, was alive. Glorious, risen Christ! Alive and robed in majesty! Yet the scars of the cross shows the infinite cost, The miraculous gift of Christ’s love for us. She reached for the hem of His garment, silent, astonished, she gazed; His feet were torn that Easter morn. She bowed before her Lord, amazed! Glorious, risen Christ! Alive and robed in majesty! Yet the scars of the cross show the infinite cost, the miraculous gift, of Christ’s love for us. Glorious, risen Christ! Alive and robed in majesty! Yet the scars of the cross show the infinite cost, the miraculous gift, God’s holy gift, the life changing gift of Christ’s love for us!
