Ascension Day is always the 40th day (a Thursday) of the Easter season; Ascension
Sunday is usually observed the Sunday following. The Ascension was the act of Jesus
returning to his place of Heavenly glory in his physical body as witnessed by the
Apostles, and marked the close of his post-resurrection appearances. The Ascension
was recorded in Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and Acts 1:9-11.

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude – “When There’s Love At Home” – Arr. by Roger C. Wilson

*Call to Worship

  • L: Why are we looking up to heaven?
  • P: Christ has come; Christ has risen; Christ will come again.
  • L: Why are we looking ahead to the future?
  • P: The Holy Spirit is among us now. In our baptism, we have already died and risen with Christ.
  • L: Why are we afraid of death and dying?
  • P: God’s love casts out our fear.
  • L: Why are we afraid to follow Jesus?
  • P: In Christ, we have the promise of new life now, eternal life to come. In Christ, we join our hearts to worship God, who has prepared for us to enter the reign of God.

    Lift your heads, eternal gates, Alleluia!
    Christ hath conquered death and sin, Alleluia!
    Take the King of glory in, Alleluia!
  3. See! the heaven its Lord receives, Alleluia!
    Yet he loves the earth he leaves, Alleluia!
    Though returning to his throne, Alleluia!
    Still he calls the world his own, Alleluia!

*Unison Prayer

Ever-living God, your eternal Christ once dwelt on earth, confined by time
and space. Give us faith to discern in every time and place the presence
among us of him who is head over all things and fills all: Jesus Christ our
ascended Lord. Amen.

*Hymn – “Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise” – UMH #312 (v. 4)

  1. See! he lifts his hands above, Alleluia!
    See! he shows the prints of love, Alleluia!
    Hark! his gracious lips bestow, Alleluia!
    Blessings on his church below, Alleluia!

Time with the Children and Youth

Scripture Reading – Acts 1:1-11

1Theophilus, the first scroll I wrote concerned everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning, 2right up to the day when he was taken up into heaven. Before he was taken up, working in the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus instructed the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he showed them that he was alive with many convincing proofs. He appeared to them over a period of forty days, speaking to them about God’s kingdom. 4While they were eating together, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised. He said, “This is what you heard from me: 5John baptized with water, but in only a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

6As a result, those who had gathered together asked Jesus, “Lord, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now?”

7Jesus replied, “It isn’t for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority. 8Rather, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

9After Jesus said these things, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going away and as they were staring toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood next to them. 11They said, “Galileans, why are you standing here, looking toward heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you saw him go into heaven.”

Anthem – “In the Garden” – Arr. by Cynthia Dobrinski

Scripture Reading – Ephesians 1:15-23

15Since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, this is the reason that 16I don’t stop giving thanks to God for you when I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation that makes God known to you. 18I pray that the eyes of your heart will have enough light to see what is the hope of God’s call, what is the richness of God’s glorious inheritance among believers, 19and what is the overwhelming greatness of God’s power that is working among us believers. This power is conferred by the energy of God’s powerful strength. 20God’s power was at work in Christ when God raised him from the dead and sat him at God’s right side in the heavens, 21far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future. 22God put everything under Christ’s feet and made him head of everything in the church, 23which is his body. His body, the church, is the fullness of Christ, who fills everything in every way.

  • L: The Word of God, the Word of Life.
  • P: Thanks be to God!

Sermon

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

*Hymn – “Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies” – UMH #173

  1. Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
    Christ, the true, the only light,
    Sun of Righteousness, arise,
    triumph o’er the shades of night;
    Dayspring from on high, be near;
    Daystar, in my heart appear.
  2. Dark and cheerless is the morn
    unaccompanied by thee;
    joyless is the day’s return,
    till thy mercy’s beams I see;
    till they inward light impart,
    cheer my eyes and warm my heart.
  3. Visit then this soul of mine;
    pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
    fill me, Radiancy divine,
    scatter all my unbelief;
    more and more thyself display,
    shining to the perfect day.

*Prayer of Dedication

*Closing Hymn – “Jesus Shall Reign” – UMH #157

  1. Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
    does its successive journeys run;
    his kingdom spread from shore to shore,
    till moons shall wax and wane no more.
  2. To Jesus endless prayer be made,
    and endless praises crown his head;
    his name like sweet perfume shall rise
    with every morning sacrifice.
  3. People and realms of every tongue
    dwell on his love with sweetest song;
    and infant voices shall proclaim
    their early blessings on his name.
  4. Blessings abound where’er he reigns;
    all prisoners leap and loose their chains;
    the weary find eternal rest,
    and all who suffer want are blest.
  5. Let every creature rise and bring
    honors peculiar to our King;
    angels descend with songs again,
    and earth repeat the loud amen!

*Benediction

Lyrics to Special Music

A Home of Grace
O, thank you, Lord, for fam’ly, how precious your design. That through the gift of parents we know your love divine. They lead us and they teach us. They help us find our place. And working all together, we build a home of grace. O, thank you, Lord, for fam’ly, no two of them the same. For all who care for children though never share their name. O, teach us, Lord, compassion and help us grow our faith, ‘til ev’ry home is cherished and built upon your grace. O, thank you, Lord, for fam’ly. This is our earnest prayer for mothers and for fathers, for the hearts of all who care. And though sometimes imperfect and though we lose our way, today we pledge and promise to build a home of grace. Build a home of grace.
