Prelude – “Come, Holy Ghost” – Arr. by Roger C. Wilson
Call to Worship
- L: The wind at our backs, we entered Jerusalem, only to watch him die on the cross. It spiraled so quickly. Trial. Torture. Crucifixion. Death. But on the third day, the breath of God blew new life into our futures. Forty days with the risen Jesus. Before he ascended, Jesus reminded us that the Spirit will come. It happened on Pentecost. It was on Pentecost when the wind breathed into each and every one of us. Let us pray:
- P: Sacred breath, move through this room. Unlock a song within us, your
people. Breathe into us your hopes and dreams for a world filled with
justice, love, and peace. Amen.
*Hymn – “Now Thank We All Our God” – UMH #102 (vv. 1-2)
- Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. - O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;
and keep us still in grace, and guide us when perplexed;
and free us from all ills, in this world and the next.
*Congregational Prayer (written by Confirmation class)
Almighty and Everlasting God, Forgive us for our weak faith. Forgive us
when we don’t serve your people. Thank you for giving us life. Thank you
for giving us family to care for us. Guide the people of your church as we
follow Jesus. May you have everlasting praise and glory. In Jesus name,
we pray. Amen.
*Hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” UMH #102 (v. 3)
- All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given;
the Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven;
the one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Scripture Reading – Acts 2:1-21
1When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
5There were pious Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd gathered. They were mystified because everyone heard them speaking in their native languages. 7They were surprised and amazed, saying, “Look, aren’t all the people who are speaking Galileans, every one of them? 8How then can each of us hear them speaking in our native language? 9Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; as well as residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the regions of Libya bordering Cyrene; and visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism), 11Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the mighty works of God in our own languages!” 12They were all surprised and bewildered. Some asked each other, “What does this mean?” 13Others jeered at them, saying, “They’re full of new wine!”
14Peter stood with the other eleven apostles. He raised his voice and declared,
“Judeans and everyone living in Jerusalem! Know this! Listen carefully to my
words! 15These people aren’t drunk, as you suspect; after all, it’s only nine o’clock in
the morning! 16Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young will see visions.
Your elders will dream dreams.
18 Even upon my servants, men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will cause wonders to occur in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.
20 The sun will be changed into darkness,
and the moon will be changed into blood,
before the great and spectacular day of the Lord comes.
21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- L: The Word of God, the Word of Life.
- P: Thanks be to God!

Song – “Baptized in Water” – FWS #2248
- Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
cleansed by the blood of Christ, our King;
heirs of salvation, trusting his promise,
faithfully now God’s praises we sing. - Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
dead in the tomb with Christ, our King;
one with his rising, freed and forgiven,
thankfully now God’s praises we sing. - Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit,
marked with the sign of Christ, our King;
born of one Father, we are his children,
joyfully now God’s praises we sing.
*Closing Song – “A Place at the Table” – W&S #3149
Refrain:
And God will delight
when we are creators of justice and joy,
yes, God will delight
when we are creators of justice,
justice and joy!
- For everyone born, a place at the table,
for everyone born, clean water and bread,
a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing,
for everyone born, a star overhead. [Refrain] - For woman and man, a place at the table,
revising the roles, deciding the share,
with wisdom and grace, dividing the power,
for woman and man, a system that’s fair. [Refrain] - For young and for old, a place at the table,
a voice to be heard, a part in the song,
the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled,
for young and for old, the right to belong. [Refrain] - For just and unjust, a place at the table,
abuser, abused, with need to forgive,
in anger, in hurt, a mind-set of mercy,
for just and unjust, a new way to live. [Refrain] - For everyone born, a place at the table,
to live without fear, and simply to be,
to work, to speak out, to witness and worship,
for everyone born, the right to be free. [Refrain]

Lyrics to Special Music
Holy Spirit Flame and Fire
Holy Spirit, Flame and Fire, Comforter Divine, Fill our heart with true devotion, Make us wholly Thine. Sun of splendor, Blaze of glory, Dawn of God’s design, Light our darkness with Your brightness, make Your glory on us shine, Holy Spirit, Light Divine. Holy Spirit, Peace and Presence, Source of pow’r and love, Lord of mercy, God of pardon, Heav’n descended Dove, Life unending, Joy o’er flowing, Gifts of boundless love, boundless love, with compassion lead Your people; Send Your comfort from above, Holy spirit, Lord and Love. Holy Spirit, Guide and Guardian, Font of wondrous grace, Grant that we may feel You near in ev’ry time and place. Intercessor, faith renewing God of time and space, Lead us so to live in You that we may see our Father’s face, Holy Spirit, Truth and Grace. Amen.
I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light
I want to walk as a child of the light; I want to follow Jesus.
God set the stars to give light to the world; The star of my life is Jesus.
(Refrain) In him there is no darkness at all; The night and the day are both alike.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God; Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.
I want to see the brightness of God; I want to look at Jesus.
Clear Sun of righteousness, shine on my path, And show me the way to the Father.
(Refrain) I’m looking for the coming of Christ; I want to be with Jesus.
When we have run with patience the race, We shall know the joy of Jesus. (Refrain)
