Today is the second of a 2-part sermon series entitled “How Shall We Love?” The night before his death, Jesus gave his Disciples a “new” commandment: to love one another. This naturally begs the question, What does this love look like? This short series will only begin to unpack what active love looks like. Today’s worship theme is Loving as the key to joy. The main point is that joy comes from abiding in Christ; and to abide in Christ is to obey his command to love as he loves.

Anthem “Joyful, Joyful, Sing Praise” – By Jay Althouse

Scripture Reading – John 15:9-17

9“As the Father loved me, I too have loved you. Remain in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy will be in you and your joy will be complete. 12This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I don’t call you servants any longer, because servants don’t know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you could go and produce fruit and so that your fruit could last. As a result, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 17I give you these commandments so that you can love each other.

  • L: The Word of God, the Word of Life.
  • P: Thanks be to God!

Lyrics to Special Music

Joyful, Joyful, Sing Praise
Joyful, joyful, sing praise. Lord, we raise our voice in gladness. We know Your love from heav’n above. We know Your blessings are glorious. In ev’ry heart how great Thou art. Forevermore victorious. Joyful, joyful, sing praise. Lord, Your gifts are never ending. Beneath the skies creation lies in all its splendor and glory. You make us whole; You fill our soul. We sing Your wondrous story. Great is the Lord who reigns above all nations, loving and caring and wise. Great is the Lord, majestic and triumphant. Let us now magnify, honor and glorify: our voices rise. Joyful, joyful, sing praise. Lord, we raise our voice in gladness. We know Your love from heav’n above. We know Your blessings are glorious. Joyful, joyful, sing praise unending. Beneath the skies creation lies in all its splendor and glory. You make us whole; You fill our soul. We sing Your wondrous story, the glory of God. Joyful, joyful, sing praise. Joyful, joyful, sing. Sing to the Lord a joyful song of praise!

Bread of the World
Bread of the world in mercy broken, cup of the world in mercy shed, by Him the words of life were spoken, and in His death our sins are dead. Look on the heart by sorrow broken, look on the tears of sinners shed; and be Your feast for us a token that by your grace our souls are fed. Circle of hope, remain, hope, remain unbroken. Love, reach out and spread. Then all the world will share the glory, share in God’s blessings, share, and be fed. Bread of the world.
