Prelude – “The Church’s One Foundation” – Arr. by Steven Scott

*Call to Worship

  • L: Jesus promised to be with us always
  • P: Lord, we are thankful for that promise.
  • L: In all times, this promise gives us hope.
  • P: Lord, we rejoice in the hope you give us.
  • L: Come and celebrate the eternal promises of Christ.
  • P: Lord, we are so grateful that you have given to us so much and that you promise God’s presence with us always.

*Hymn – “We Gather Together” – UMH #131

  1. We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
    he chastens and hastens his will to make known.
    The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
    Sing praises to his name; he forgets not his own.
  2. Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
    ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;
    so from the beginning the fight we were winning;
    thou, Lord, wast at our side, all glory be thine!
  3. We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant,
    and pray that thou still our defender wilt be.
    Let thy congregation escape tribulation;
    thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!

*Prayer (unison)

Gracious Lord, this morning we come to you with so many things on our hearts. Keep our hearts and our minds open to your words of healing and of hope. Give us spirits of courage for all the times ahead. We ask your blessing on all those this day who are afflicted with illness and debilitating diseases, for those who mourn, for those who feel lost and alienated from family and from friends. Be with these dear people. Help them to feel your comforting and restoring presence. Give to us also, Lord, a spirit of peace and joy that we might live your love through our attitudes and actions. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Psalm 100

1Shout triumphantly to the LORD, all the earth!
2Serve the LORD with celebration!
Come before him with shouts of joy!
3Know that the LORD is God—
he made us; we belong to him.[a]
We are his people,
the sheep of his own pasture.
4Enter his gates with thanks;
enter his courtyards with praise!
Thank him! Bless his name!
5Because the LORD is good,
his loyal love lasts forever;
his faithfulness lasts generation after generation.

Anthem – “Harvest Hymn” – By Mary McDonald

Scripture Reading – Ephesians 1:15-23

15Since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, this is the reason that 16I don’t stop giving thanks to God for you when I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation that makes God known to you. 18I pray that the eyes of your heart will have enough light to see what is the hope of God’s call, what is the mrichness of God’s glorious inheritance among believers, 19and what is the overwhelming greatness of God’s power that is working among us believers. This power is conferred by the energy of God’s powerful strength. 20God’s power was at work in Christ when God raised him from the dead and sat him at God’s right side in the heavens, 21far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future. 22God put everything under Christ’s feet and made him head of everything in the church, 23which is his body. His body, the church, is the fullness of Christ, who fills everything in every way.

  • L: The Word of God, the Word of Life.
  • P: Thanks be to God!

Sermon – “The Church Still Matters”

Pastoral Prayer & Lord’s Prayer

*Hymn – “We Are God’s People” – FWS #2220

  1. We are God’s people, the chosen of the Lord,
    Born of the Spirit, established by the Word.
    Our cornerstone is Christ alone,
    And strong in Christ we stand;
    O let us live transparently
    And walk heart to heart and hand in hand.
  2. We are God’s loved one, the Bride of Christ, our Lord,
    For we have known it, the love of God outpoured.
    Now let us learn how to return the gift of love once given;
    O let us share each joy and care
    And live with a zeal that pleases Heaven.
  3. We are the Body of which the Lord is Head,
    Called to obey Christ, now risen from the dead.
    God wills us be a family diverse, yet truly one;
    O let us give our gifts to God
    And so shall God’s work on earth be done.
  4. We are a temple, the Spirit’s dwelling place,
    Formed in great weakness, a cup to hold God’s grace.
    We die alone, for on its own
    Each ember loses fire;
    Yet joined in one the flame burns on
    To give warmth and light and to inspire.

Offertory – “We Give Thanks” – Methodaires
Doxology
*Prayer of Dedication

*Closing Hymn – “Crown Him with Many Crowns” – UMH #327

  1. Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
    Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
    Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee,
    and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity.
  2. Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave,
    and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save.
    His glories now we sing, who died, and rose on high,
    who died, eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.
  3. Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a scepter sways
    from pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise.
    His reign shall know no end, and round his pierced feet
    fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet.
  4. Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side,
    those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
    All hail, Redeemer, hail! For thou hast died for me;
    thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity.

*Benediction

*Postlude – “Crown Him with Many Crowns”

Lyrics to Special Music

Harvest Hymn
Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home! All is safely gathered in ere the winter storms begin. God, our maker, does provide for our wants to be supplied; come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home. All the world is God’s own field, fruit unto his praise to yield, wheat and tares together sown unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade, and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear; Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring thy final harvest home, gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin, there, forever purified, in thy presence to abide. Come, with all your angels, come, raise the glorious harvest home. Amen. Amen!

We Give Thanks
We give thanks, oh God, to Thee that our nation still is free; we can worship without fear with our loved ones gathered near. Be with those in other lands who are bound by cruel bands; from oppression hope will spring, may they soon hear freedom ring. Bless our country, let us be always sure to honor Thee; make our justice truly just, may it be “In God we trust.” Amen.
