September 12, 2021 – 15th Sunday after Pentecost

Today is the second in a 4-week sermon series entitled, “Worship: The Heart of the Matter.” Without doubt, many of us are very familiar with the experience we call worship. But how many of us can reasonably define “worship”? While worship is something that we regularly do—at least, on Sunday mornings—there is a lot about worship we probably have not given much thought to. Because worship is such an important part of our lives, this series will address many of the basic questions related to worship. What is it? Why do we worship? Who is worship for? What is worship supposed to accomplish? What’s the difference between communal and private worship? Are we required to worship? What does God expect of us/me when I worship? What makes for “good” and “bad” worship? and so on. Today’s worship service will address the place and purpose of worship on a personal level.

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude – “We Have Come To Worship Thee/Sanctuary”

*Call to Worship (based on Psalm 103)

  • L: Bless the Lord, my soul.
  • P: With all our being we bless God’s holy name.
  • L: Bless the Lord, my soul, and forget none of his benefits.
  • P: God pardons all our wrongdoing and heals all our ills. He rescues us from death’s pit and crowns each of us with love and compassion. We are satisfied with all that is good, and our youth is renewed like an eagle’s.
  • L: Bless the Lord, my soul.
  • P: With all our being we bless God’s holy name.

*Song – “He Has Made Me Glad” – FWS #2270 (2x)

I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart;
I will enter His courts with praise.
I will say, “This is the day the Lord has made.”
I will rejoice for He has made me glad.

He has made me glad, He has made me glad.
I will rejoice, for He has made me glad.
He has made me glad, He has made me glad.
I will rejoice, for He has made me glad. (Repeat)

*Prayer

*Song – “Holy Ground” – FWS #2272

We are standing on holy ground,
And I know that there are angels all around.
Let us praise Jesus now.
We are standing in His presence on holy ground! (Repeat)

Scripture Readings – Psalm 63:1-8

God! My God! It’s you—I search for you! My whole being[a] thirsts for you! My body desires you in a dry and tired land, no water anywhere. Yes, I’ve seen you in the sanctuary; I’ve seen your power and glory. My lips praise you because your faithful love is better than life itself! So I will bless you as long as I’m alive; I will lift up my hands in your name. I’m fully satisfied—as with a rich dinner. My mouth speaks praise with joy on my lips—whenever I ponder you on my bed, whenever I meditate on you in the middle of the night because you’ve been a help to me and I shout for joy in the protection of your wings. My whole being clings to you; your strong hand upholds me.

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

*Hymn – “In the Garden” – UMH #314

  1. I come to the garden alone
    while the dew is still on the roses,
    and the voice I hear falling on my ear
    the Son of God discloses.

Refrain:

And he walks with me, and he talks with me,
and he tells me I am his own;
and the joy we share as we tarry there,
none other has ever known.

  1. He speaks, and the sound of his voice,
    is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
    and the melody that he gave to me
    within my heart is ringing. (Refrain)
  2. I’d stay in the garden with him
    though the night around me be falling,
    but he bids me go; thru the voice of woe
    his voice to me is calling. (Refrain)

Invitation to Give & Prayer of Dedication

Offertory – “On Eagle’s Wings” – Arr. by Mark Hayes

*Closing Hymn – “Blessed Assurance” – UMH #369

  1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
    O what a foretaste of glory divine!
    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
    born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain:

This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

  1. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
    visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
    angels descending bring from above
    echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Refrain)
  2. Perfect submission, all is at rest;
    I in my Savior am happy and blest,
    watching and waiting, looking above,
    filled with his goodness, lost in his love. (Refrain)

*Benediction

*Postlude – “Blessed Assurance”

Lyric to Special Music

Come, Sing Songs of Joy

Come, let us sing; come, sing for joy!  Sing songs of joy to God, the Rock of our salvation.  Come, let us sing; sing songs of joy!  Lift up your voice to God with songs of glad thanksgiving!  For great is the Lord, our God, our King above all gods!  Sing praise to the Lord and glorify His name.  O come, let us worship and bow down.  Let us kneel down before the Lord, our Maker.  For He is our God, and we are His people; lift your voice in praise to God.  Holy is our God.  O worship the King, all glorious above, O gratefully sing His power and His love; our Shield and the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in spendor and girded with praise. Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend, our Redeemer and Friend.

On Eagles’s Wings

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.  You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in His shadow for life.  Say to the Lord:  “My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust!”  And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.  The snare of the fowler will never capture you and famine will bring you no fear:  under His wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield.   And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.  You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day.  Though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come.    And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.  For to His angels He’s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; on their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.  And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand, in God’s hand.
