Today’s worship service focuses on Praise. How do you praise God for what God has done? How often do you think to thank God for your blessings? When you are struggling, do you still praise God? When you are busy, do you see God in the midst of the busy? This Sunday we take time to praise God joyfully in the music we hear and sing, the liturgy we read together, and in the special meal we have been invited to at Jesus’ table.

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude – “Praise to the Lord” – Arr. by Edward Broughton

*Call to Worship

  • Leader: Come, all who labor and are weighed down with responsibility, uncertainty, and worry.
  • All: We come, because the load we carry is heavier than we can bear alone.
  • Leader: Come, all you who seek to relate work and worship, leisure and service, into a meaningful whole.
  • All: We gather for spiritual renewal and practical challenge, for help in making choices and carrying out our commitments.
  • Leader: Come, sinner and saint, with your hatreds and loves, your failures and successes, your sorrows and joys.
  • All: We respond to the Spirit’s leading and open ourselves to receive God’s gracious gifts.

*Opening Song – “All Creatures of Our God and King” – UMH #62 v. 1-4

  1. All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice and with us sing,
    O praise ye! Alleluia!
O brother sun with golden beam,
O sister moon with silver gleam!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  2. O brother wind, air, clouds, and rain,
by which all creatures ye sustain,
    O praise ye! Alleluia!
Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,
ye lights of evening, find a voice!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  3. O sister water, flowing clear,
make music for thy Lord to hear,
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
O brother fire who lights the night,
    providing warmth, enhancing sight,
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  4. Dear mother earth, who day by day
    unfoldest blessings on our way,
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
let them God’s glory also show!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*Unison Prayer

God of power and mercy,
only with your help
can we offer you fitting service and praise.
May we live the faith we profess
and trust your promise of eternal life.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Psalm 145: 1-9

I will lift you up high, my God, the true king.
I will bless your name forever and always.
I will bless you every day.
I will praise your name forever and always.
The LORD is great and so worthy of praise!
God’s greatness can’t be grasped.
One generation will praise your works to the next one,
proclaiming your mighty acts.
They will talk about the glorious splendor of your majesty;
I will contemplate your wondrous works.
They will speak of the power of your awesome deeds;
I will declare your great accomplishments.
They will rave in celebration of your abundant goodness;
they will shout joyfully about your righteousness:
“The LORD is merciful and compassionate,
very patient, and full of faithful love.
The LORD is good to everyone and everything;
God’s compassion extends to all his handiwork!”

Musical Response of Praise – “We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise” – FWS #2031

We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.
We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.
And we offer up to You the sacrifices of thanksgiving;
And we offer up to You the sacrifices of joy.

Scripture Reading – Philippians 1: 1-11

From Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. To all those in Philippi who are God’s people in Christ Jesus, along with your supervisors and servants. May the grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. I thank my God every time I mention you in my prayers. I’m thankful for all of you every time I pray, and it’s always a prayer full of joy. I’m glad because of the way you have been my partners in the ministry of the gospel from the time you first believed it until now. I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus. I have good reason to think this way about all of you because I keep you in my heart. You are all my partners in God’s grace, both during my time in prison and in the defense and support of the gospel. God is my witness that I feel affection for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus.

This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with
knowledge and all kinds of insight. I pray this so that you will be able to decide
what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of
Christ. I pray that you will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which
comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God.

*Closing Song – “For the Beauty of the Earth” – UMH #92

Refrain: Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

  1. For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies; (Refrain)
  2. For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon, and stars of light; (Refrain)
  3. For the joy of ear and eye,
for the heart and mind’s delight,
    for the mystic harmony
linking sense to sound and sight; (Refrain)
  4. For the joy of human love,
    brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild; (Refrain)
  5. For thy church, that evermore
    lifteth holy hands above,
    offering up on every shore
her pure sacrifice of love; (Refrain)
  6. For thyself, best Gift Divine,
to the world so freely given,
for that great, great love of thine,
peace on earth, and joy in heaven: (Refrain)

*Benediction
