September 5, 2021 – 15th Sunday after Pentecost

Today we begin a 4-week sermon series entitled, “Worship: The Heart of the Matter.”Without doubt, many of us are very familiar with the experience we call worship. But how many of us can reasonably define “worship”? While worship is something that we regularly do—at least, on Sunday mornings—there is a lot about worship we probably have not given much thought to. Because worship is such an important part of our lives, this series will address many of the basic questions related to worship. What is it? Why do we worship? Who is worship for? What is worship supposed to accomplish? What’s the difference between communal and private worship? Are we required to worship? What does God expect of us/me when I worship? What makes for “good” and “bad” worship? and so on. Today’s worship service will address the place and purpose of worship for the Christian.

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude – “All Creatures of Our God and King” – Arr. by Gregg Sewell

*Call to Worship (based on Psalm 42)

  • L: Just like a deer that craves streams of water,
  • P: My whole being craves you, God. My whole being thirsts for God, for the living God.
  • L: I remember how I made my way to the Mighty One’s own house with joyous shouts and thanksgiving songs—a huge crowd celebrating the festival.
  • P: I hope in God! I will again give him thanks, my saving presence, and my God.
  • L: By day the Lord commands his faithful love; by night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.
  • P: I will again give him thanks, my saving presence, and my God.

*Hymn – “All Creatures of Our God and King”   UMH #62 (vv. 1-4, 7)

  1. All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice and with us sing,
    O praise ye! Alleluia!
O brother sun with golden beam,
O sister moon with silver gleam!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  2. O brother wind, air, clouds, and rain,
by which all creatures ye sustain,
    O praise ye! Alleluia!
Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,
ye lights of evening, find a voice!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  3. O sister water, flowing clear,
make music for thy Lord to hear,
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
O brother fire who lights the night,
    providing warmth, enhancing sight,
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  4. Dear mother earth, who day by day
    unfoldest blessings on our way,
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
let them God’s glory also show!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
  5. Let all things their Creator bless,
    and worship him in humbleness,
    O praise ye! Alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One!
O praise ye! O praise ye!
    Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*Congregational Prayer (unison)

God, we’ve gathered together as the church this morning because your Spirit put the call out and we responded. But also, because we ourselves want to be here; we recognize the deep value in setting aside some time to come into your holy presence with words of praise and hearts of thanksgiving. In this hour we offer ourselves to you as living sacrifices, and we receive all that you would pour into us today; that we would be inspired to greater faith and trust in you. Through Christ Jesus we pray. Amen.

*Song – “As the Deer” – FWS #2025 (2x)

As the deer pants for the water,
So my soul longs after you.
You alone are my heart’s desire,
And I long to worship you.
You alone are my strength, my shield;
To you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire,
And I long to worship you.

Scripture Reading – Mark 12:28-31

One of the legal experts heard their dispute and saw how well Jesus answered them. He came over and asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”

Jesus replied, “The most important one is Israel, listen! Our God is the one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You will love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.”
